PBS KIDS Series PEG + CAT Helps Kids Build Math and Problem-Solving Skills

Arlington, Va. – May 12, 2016 – PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing four stories from PBS KIDS’ popular PEG + CAT series from The Fred Rogers Company on the new DVD “PEG + CAT: OUT OF THIS WORLD,” available starting July 5. Solving problems is even more amazing when you’re doing it on another planet! In this DVD, Peg and Cat have to put their heads together to fix their spaceship, outsmart Big Mouth (a crafty space alien who loves to dance), and win a cosmic t-ball game. Good thing they’re great at spotting patterns and working together as a team! Join Peg and Cat as they visit the Purple Planet and use their TOTALLY AWESOME math skills to solve problems and have fun-filled space adventures.

The run time of the new DVD “OUT OF THIS WORLD” is approximately 60 minutes, and its SRP is $6.99. The stories featured on the DVD include:

The Doohickey Problem

When their space ship is smashed, Peg and Cat must reassemble its variously shaped parts, and retrieve 16 stolen doohickeys.

The Long Line Problem

While waiting in a long line, Peg and Cat try to help Richard realize his dream of being first in line for the first time.

Richard the Third

At Richard’s family’s highly competitive annual picnic, Peg and Cat try to help Richard achieve his dream of not coming in third in every single event.

The T-Ball Problem

Peg’s t-ball team, the Mighty Nine, have no chance against a team of alien all-stars – unless Peg can use the aliens’ t-ball cards to predict where they’ll hit.

Each PEG + CAT adventure features a story in which Peg and Cat encounter an unexpected challenge that requires them to use math and problem-solving skills. While it teaches specific math lessons, the series also emphasizes resilience and perseverance.

When the nominations for the 43rd Annual Daytime Emmy® Awards were announced, PET + CAT was nominated for five awards, including: “Outstanding Pre-School Children’s Animated Program,” “Outstanding Writing in a Preschool Animated Program,” “Outstanding Directing in an Animated Program,” “Outstanding Music Direction and Composition,” and “Outstanding Original Song” for “Fairy Tale Wedding.” PEG + CAT won for “Outstanding Writing in a Preschool Animated Program” and “Outstanding Music Direction and Composition.”

PEG + CAT was created by Jennifer Oxley (“Little Bill,” “The Wonder Pets!”) and Billy Aronson (“Rent,” “Postcards from Buster”) and is a production of The Fred Rogers Company. PEG + CAT, which made its broadcast debut in October 2013, airs daily on PBS KIDS (check local listings).

PEG + CAT is funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the U.S. Department of Education through the Ready To Learn Initiative, a program that supports the development of innovative educational television and digital media targeted at preschool and early elementary schoolchildren and their families.

 In Emilee’s opinion:

Peg + Cat: Out of this World was another DVD that my five year old son loved. In this DVD there were four stories where Peg and Cat figured out their small problems. They worked together really well as a team. Yes, there were some really BIG PROBLEMS for Peg and Cat to figure out but I loved their attitude about it. They didn’t whine but they solved them by using their heads. The episode, Richard the third was my favorite. The smallest and youngest Richard was always coming in third place so they gave him the nickname, Richard the third. Peg turned his problem into a positive situation and pointed out the ways he came in first. It was a cute story and I loved the outcome. I definitely recommend watching Peg + Cat: Out of this World for two reasons. One, it was adventurous and educational and two, it felt like a positive learning experience to have with my children. I cherish those moments when I can teach my children about good works.
